Demo

The Shire has been asked to provide a standard SCA demonstration. So... we will be fighting, dancing, singing, and providing atmosphere for the event by simply being there. Fighting will be done at the top of every hour in 20 minute segments (this is the basic minimal plan, if fighters have the energy and want to fight more that this, they are welcome to do so). There will be room for two simultaneous lists and if we have enough fighters, small melees may also be possible(!).

Dancing and madrigal singing will take over the lists between fighting sessions, but will also have the option of wandering the site to perform for audiences elsewhere while the fighters are on the list field.

A static arts and sciences display will be set up on tables near the lists. Anyone willing to donate items for the display... well you know the rest....

Volunteers will also be needed to talk to the public (esp. about A&S) and to bear water for the fighters.

Other things happening at the fair:

There will be several merchants selling period or semi-period (crafts, jewelry, etc.) items. Various performers such as musicians, jugglers and magicians will be on site as well as some art demonstrators. A childrens tent will offer games, entertainment and craft projects. There will be a "living chess game" towards the end of the day.

Please note:

• The public is being charged an entrance fee for the event (it is a fund-raiser after all). SCA demonstrators are exempt from this fee. Mention that you are with the SCA when you enter the gate.
• This is a very high-profile demo - wear your best garb!
• Invite your SCAdian friends! All are welcome. The more the merrier and the more colorful we will make the event.
• The Shire is purchasing some picnic-type food for demonstrators to snack on during the day. If you'd like to bring anything to contribute to this, please feel free. The Shire needs milk jugs for water (for both this demo and for Southern regional war practice). If ya got em, bring em.
• Despite the rumors which have circulated, there WILL NOT be a free bar or free beer at the event.
• Finally, please keep in mind that this is the first time this organization has attempted to host an event of this kind. They are counting on us to help them make it a success - something they will be able to turn into an annual event. Come prepared to work and play hard and to have a good time. When we are having fun, it shows!

Directions to the site:

Find your best way to Route 61. For the majority of the Shire, this will mean Rt. 22 west from the Lehigh Valley.

Follow Rt. 61 north to Pottsville. As you come into town, you will pass the Cressona Mall on your left. At the next light past the mall, you will come to the intersection of Rt. 61 and Rt. 209. There will be a Dunkin Donuts and a KFC on the corner. Turn left onto Rt. 209 south. Follow the street up the hill and make a right at the next light. Look for Mahantango St. on your left. Turn left and follow Mahantango up the hill. The Yuengling Mansion will be at the very top of the hill on your right.
